Explosive drone found at Leipzig airport marks dangerous escalation for Europe; initial evidence points to Russian-orchestrated plot

Leipzig, Germany — An armed drone found in the airport’s secure cargo flight operations area near the southern runway was carrying an explosive device and did not detonate after a faulty detonator failed, police said. The device was discovered by an employee, “carrying an unknown explosive device” in the secure area near the runway. The incident, the first such find far from Ukraine’s border, raises questions about a broader risk to European aviation.

Photographs published by German newspapers show a quadcopter, a design familiar from the war, with a package attached.²

The attached bomb was reportedly made of semtex plastic explosive — the second of the two, the munition that exploded inside Pan Am 103 over Lockerbie.³

But the detonator failed and the device did not explode.

Police from Saxony confirmed that the drone was carrying an unknown explosive device.

Authorities say as much as 800g of explosive were present, per Leipziger Volkszeitung.

“This would be enough to do considerable damage” to a plane, Trevor Lawrence, an explosives expert with Cranfield University, not least because “aeroplane bodies are ridiculously thin, often only 3mm aluminium”.

Initial evidence points to a Russian-orchestrated plot, underscoring concerns about cross-border threats.⁵
