Europe's tallest statue of the Virgin Mary, inaugurated in Konotopie, Poland, stands at 55.6 meters (182 feet), surpassing the Christ the Redeemer statue in Brazil. The ceremony featured Lech Walesa, who remarked, “I started with the Virgin Mary and I end with the Virgin Mary.”

The statue, commissioned by local millionaires Roman and Grażyna Karkosik, symbolizes gratitude to God. The event attracted hundreds, with helicopters dropping red roses and a Mass celebrated by priests in white robes. The Mazowsze folk ensemble performed traditional music, enhancing the festive atmosphere.¹²⁴

This monument not only represents a significant religious symbol but also a cultural landmark for the village of Konotopie, which has a population of fewer than 150. The statue's height includes a 15-meter (49-foot) pedestal, making it the largest Virgin Mary statue in Europe, although a taller one exists in the Philippines at 98 meters (322 feet). Walesa's presence at the ceremony underscores the statue's importance in Polish history and faith.⁵
