The European Union has greenlit a
$106 billion loan package for
Ukraine, addressing urgent economic and military pressures resulting from ongoing conflict with Russia. This decision follows a political impasse and comes as the EU also imposes new sanctions against Russia.
EU Council President António Costa stated,
“Promised, delivered, implemented,” emphasizing the urgency of financial support to aid Ukraine's defense and economic stabilization. The funding, split over two years, aims to cover a significant portion of Ukraine's defense spending and help manage its national budget deficiencies.
The need for this aid is critical; as stated,
“Ukraine desperately needs the loan package to prop up its war-ravaged economy and help keep Russian forces at bay.” The approval was facilitated by a resumption of Russian oil exports to Hungary and Slovakia, reopening diplomatic pathways.
