The Commission cited severe electoral offences and
subversion of the democratic process during the April 29 polling phase, including at least
77 complaints of EVM tampering. Following these concerns, the electoral body stated that irregularities in numerous polling stations prompted the cancellation of the original results.
Protests erupted ahead of the announcement, with locals claiming
TMC associate Israfil Chowkidar threatened them with violence related to the impending election results. Protesters, including many women, blocked roads in Hasimnagar village, showcasing significant discontent among constituents as tensions heatedly escalated.
In response to the uprising,
Central Reserve Police Force personnel were dispatched to the area, ensuring voters of heightened security measures. Furthermore, the Commission deployed an additional
165 counting observers and 77 police observers in West Bengal to oversee a fair counting process.
The announcement for repolling came swiftly after various protests and allegations of harassment by political figures against voters, marking significant unrest within the district leading up to the next polling date.
