Delhi transport bodies are calling for an immediate fare increase for auto and taxi services after a ₹3.89 per kg hike in CNG prices, which now stand at ₹86.98 per kg. The Auto Rickshaw Association and Delhi Pradesh Taxi Union have threatened a strike on September 9 if their demands are not met.
Rajendra Soni, General Secretary of the Delhi Pradesh Taxi Union, stated, “The Delhi government should increase auto and taxi fares with immediate effect within one week, as CNG prices were increased by ₹3.89 this morning, which has suddenly increased the financial burden on poor drivers.” He emphasized that the cumulative increase in CNG prices over the past two to three months has been approximately ₹10-11.2
Rajendra Kapoor, President of the All India Motor and Goods Transport Association, warned that the price hike is not just about fuel costs, stating, “It will have a direct impact on the pockets of the common man, the transport industry and ultimately the prices of essential commodities.” The transport bodies are urging the government to either raise fares or provide a subsidy on CNG prices to alleviate the financial strain on drivers.45
The increase in CNG prices is attributed to rising costs of imported LNG, which have surged due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia, affecting the overall transport sector in Delhi and surrounding areas.
