Costco's recent receipt of $184 million in tariff refunds is a significant financial boost for the retailer, which plans to reinvest these funds into lowering prices for its members.
The refunds, which include $174 million in refunds and $10 million in interest, represent over one-third of the total refunds Costco anticipates receiving.
CEO Ron Vachris stated during the company's earnings call that the refunds have already been utilized to provide value back to members through price reductions on various items, including produce, meat, beverages, and nonfood items like home furnishings and hardware.
CFO Gary Millerchip emphasized that the pricing strategy is aimed at giving back to members, noting, “Our goal was to make sure that we spread those as we could to items that would have the most impact.”

The refunds are a result of a federal court ruling that allows companies to reclaim tariffs imposed by the Trump administration, with the federal government potentially liable for $175 billion in refunds overall.6
Millerchip indicated that Costco intends to continue reinvesting the majority of the refunds into member value, stating, “We plan to provide a similar level of information about the net impact on future quarterly earnings calls.”
As Costco navigates the financial landscape, the company reported nearly $96 billion in fourth-quarter revenue, marking an 11% increase from the previous year, with net income rising 15%.
“The refunds stem from a federal judge's ruling that importers are entitled to refunds after the Supreme Court struck down IEEPA tariffs. Costco's CFO said the $184M includes $174M in refunds and $10M in interest, representing over a third of expected total refunds.”
