Construction has officially commenced on Enbridge's $4 billion Sunrise pipeline expansion near Prince George, B.C., just three months after receiving federal approval.¹

Federal Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson emphasized the rapid progress, stating, “The Sunrise Expansion project has gone from approval to groundbreaking in just three months, showing how in 2026 Canada has gone from delay to delivery.”

The project will add approximately 300 million cubic feet per day of natural gas transportation capacity by constructing 139 km of new pipeline and looping segments, enhancing the existing 2,900-kilometre Westcoast Pipeline.⁴

Enbridge, in partnership with 38 First Nations, aims to create about 2,500 new jobs in B.C., including 1,300 in the local region. Completion is anticipated by the end of 2028.

The pipeline will utilize Canadian-made steel from InterPro Pipe and Steel in Saskatchewan.

“Natural gas is not a transition fuel. Natural gas is a destination fuel,” said Greg Ebel, highlighting the importance of natural gas for global energy access.

The federal government noted that the Sunrise project will ensure adequate supplies for liquefied natural gas export facilities while meeting local demands.

Chief Dolleen Logan of the Lheidli T'enneh First Nation remarked, “It reflects what is possible when First Nations are involved as partners from the beginning.”
