Cole Tomas Allen, 31, from Torrance, California, has opted to stay in jail as he faces charges for
attempting to assassinate President Trump at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner. He is accused of carrying a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives to the event.
According to prosecutors,
Allen traveled from Los Angeles with a cache of weapons and had conducted online research about the gala after Trump announced his attendance. Allen was apprehended by Secret Service agents after sprinting through a security checkpoint at the Washington Hilton, where Trump dined with several dignitaries and journalists.
Newly released footage shows the tense four seconds during which Allen rushed towards the security checkpoint, leading to a shooting incident. The video captures a security agent opening fire as Allen brandished a long-barreled weapon.
District Attorney Jeanine Pirro's office previously argued that releasing Allen would not safely assure community protection. They indicated that Allen's activities had included casing the area before the event, revealing a premeditated effort towards violence; he had also sent alarming messages to family members outlining a hierarchy of targets within the administration.
Acting US Attorney Todd Blanche noted that the suspect managed to cover about
60 feet (18 meters) before being tackled and subdued, which underlined the potential threat he posed at the dinner.
Allen has pleaded not guilty but remains in custody while awaiting trial.
