Code.org rebrands to CodeAI, expanding its mission from coding education to AI learning; Hour of Code becomes Hour of AI.

Code.org has officially rebranded to CodeAI, marking a significant shift from its traditional focus on coding education to a broader emphasis on artificial intelligence learning. This change reflects the growing importance of AI in the digital landscape, as the organization aims to enhance digital fluency among students.¹

The rebranding includes the transformation of its annual Hour of Code event into the Hour of AI, which is designed to engage students in understanding how AI technology works. This initiative is part of a larger strategy to equip students with essential skills in a rapidly evolving technological environment.²

“Shifting from this computer science domain to a broader surface area of digital sciences, where AI science and increasingly are important in rounding out these areas of digital technology that every student should have access to, is the impetus for this,” said a spokesperson for CodeAI. The organization has recognized the necessity of teaching students about AI, having incorporated AI education into its curriculum for several years.³

Reflecting on the evolution of computer science education, a representative noted, “When I grew up, my computer science curriculum taught me about memory management. Today’s software engineer and computer science program does not teach about it.” This highlights the need for educational institutions to adapt to the innovations brought by AI, which is described as “computer science’s most innovative creation.”
