The Pear Lake wildfire in British Columbia has expanded to 124,656 hectares, severely impacting the Clinton ranch owned by Barb Edmonson. As the fire merges with the 57 Creek fire, Edmonson has fought to protect her property, witnessing her years of hard work consumed by flames.12

Edmonson described the harrowing experience, stating, “We were hit with the vortex of black ash, sand, gravel, it was like being in a hurricane.” Despite being under an evacuation order, she chose to stay and protect her ranch, which has historical significance dating back to 1896.

The fire, part of the Big Bar Complex, has led to the destruction of eleven structures and this year’s hay crop. Edmonson managed to save her cattle and horses but lamented the loss of her livelihood, saying, “That is a lifetime in the making.” The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) has reported that the fire's aggressive behavior is driven by conditions such as winds above 15 km/h and humidity below 30%.36

As of August 4, 238 firefighting personnel, 95 pieces of heavy equipment, and 24 helicopters are deployed to combat the blaze. Evacuations are in effect for the Village of Clinton and surrounding areas, with strong winds and high temperatures expected to exacerbate the situation in the coming days.8

The BCWS anticipates that fire behavior will increase as conditions dry out, posing further challenges to containment efforts.7

Key Insight
“The fire is part of the Big Bar Complex and spans more than 1,150 square kilometres; eight evacuation orders and four alerts remain in effect. Barb Edmonson, who stayed to defend the Firefly Ranch, lost 11 structures including a barn with this year's hay crop and historic 1896 buildings.”
