Canva's recent layoffs of 1,271 employees, or 22% of its workforce, mark a significant restructuring as the company faces slowed growth for the first time in a decade. CEO Melanie Perkins described this as the "most difficult moment" in the company's 13-year history.1
The layoffs affect over 5,700 employees across 37 countries, including India. Each departing employee will receive at least six months' salary, along with 12 months of healthcare coverage where applicable. Additionally, they will keep their company-issued MacBooks and receive a 12-month LinkedIn Premium subscription to assist in job searches and networking.23457
Canva is also offering one-to-one career coaching and interview preparation, while its Canva Care program will remain available for 12 months. Under the Canva Collective Fund, employees can apply for grants of $10,000 to launch businesses or projects in their communities, with no ownership claims from Canva.68
The restructuring aims to consolidate product, growth, and platform teams into a single organization, with Sydney becoming the primary base for product teams. Starting January, most hybrid employees will be expected to work from the office two to three days a week. This decision follows a reported 17% cut in Canva's valuation by its largest venture backer, Blackbird, to $34.9 billion in August 2026.
“Affected staff receive at least six months' salary and 12 months of healthcare, plus access to $10,000 grants from the Canva Collective Fund. Departing employees keep Slack and Gmail access until week's end, with applications for grants open until December 14.”
