In a landmark update, the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has announced reforms to the Express Entry system for 2026, emphasizing occupations that earn above the national median wage and merging key immigration streams.

The new framework will prioritize skilled workers in sectors like healthcare and transportation, which are currently experiencing labor shortages. This decision aligns with Canada’s strategy to enhance its workforce and economic competitiveness. The Government of Canada recognizes that skilled immigration is vital for maintaining and enhancing the country’s innovation capacity.

A significant change includes a proposal to merge the Federal Skilled Worker Programme and the Canadian Experience Class to simplify the immigration process. The IRCC is exploring how this merger can reduce administrative complexity, ensuring a more streamlined experience for applicants.

Under these proposed reforms, candidates in high-wage occupations will receive extra points for their earnings through the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). Specifically, jobs paying 2x, 1.5x, and/or 1.3x the median wage will gain priority. This list is based on Statistics Canada data and will be continually updated on the IRCC website.
