Bumblebees display tool use and problem-solving abilities akin to those of chimpanzees, according to new research.

Bumblebees have displayed remarkable cognitive capabilities comparable to primates in recent research. Conducted by biologists from Finland's University of Oulu, the study involved training bees to associate a blue dot with sugary rewards and provided them with a small polystyrene ball to manipulate.
According to study author Olli Loukola, "This is essentially an insect version of the classic 'box-and-banana' problem," showcasing the bees' ability to use tools independently to achieve goals. In experiments, 75% of the bees successfully rolled the ball to reach artificial flowers. This discovery marks a significant advance in understanding insect intelligence, with Loukola noting that "for over a century, spontaneous object-based problem-solving has mostly been studied in vertebrates."
The findings illustrate that 23 out of 30 bees were successful in completing the task, demonstrating their understanding of the problem's stakes. As the study concludes, bees are proving that significant intelligence can exist within compact nervous systems, reaffirming their status as cognitive models of insect behavior.
