Police Chief Mike Krantz stated that the gunman had previously attended the school but was not enrolled in the Bend-La Pine district at the time of the incident. The shooting occurred in a special needs classroom, where all victims were present.
In addition to Summer and Lambert, two other individuals—a 7-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher—were hospitalized with critical injuries. The police are continuing their investigation, examining the shooter's online activity for any signs of obsession with violence.12
The weapon used in the attack, a Maverick 88 pump action 12-gauge shotgun, was reportedly purchased by the shooter's mother.
Chief Krantz praised the actions of first responders and school personnel, stating, “You ran towards the worst thing any first responder can ever confront in our work with courage and compassion.”
“The bystander, 36-year-old Kaylub Giamanco, legally held a weapon in his car and shot the suspect multiple times after following him into the classroom. A teacher who tackled the suspect "almost certainly helped prevent more bloodshed," and police expect to investigate the classroom as a crime scene through Oct. 20.”
