Bangladesh has implemented new energy-saving measures due to the ongoing Middle East conflict impacting global fuel prices. Starting Friday, government offices will operate from 9 AM to 4 PM, while banks will close by 4 PM and shops must shut by 6 PM.

"The fuel supply line is unsecured... both government and private offices will run from 9 AM to 4 PM," said top government secretary Nasimul Gani at a news briefing.

These measures are expected to reduce energy consumption by at least 30 percent, as Bangladesh seeks loans of around $2 billion from multilateral donors to address its energy challenges.

Additionally, the government has cut public spending in various sectors, including a 50 percent reduction in hospitality expenditure and a 30 percent reduction in non-essential travel. To further alleviate the energy strain, authorities are rationing fuel and limiting operating hours of gas stations amid panic buying and hoarding.

The Bangladesh-India Friendship Pipeline has been vital, with India supplying approximately 5,000 metric tonnes of diesel to Bangladesh, and a proposal for an additional 50,000 metric tonnes is under consideration. As part of the austerity measures, decorative wedding lighting is also banned to further conserve energy.
