Apple plans to open iPhone clipboard access to Windows PCs; feature follows Microsoft interoperability request and could be limited to the EU

Apple is set to develop a clipboard-sync feature that will enable users to copy and paste content between iPhones and Windows PCs, a move prompted by a Microsoft interoperability request in the EU. This feature aims to enhance cross-device productivity, similar to Apple's existing Universal Clipboard functionality.

The feature will allow users to access clipboard data seamlessly, with Apple stating that it will follow patterns similar to its existing Accessory Notifications and Accessory Live Activities frameworks introduced in iOS 26.5. Users will need to grant permission for each new device using the AccessorySetupKit API, ensuring security and integrity of the iOS system.

Microsoft's original request, submitted on March 25, 2026, emphasized the need for persistent clipboard access, arguing that cross-device copy and paste is a foundational productivity interaction that users expect. Apple initially hesitated, citing concerns over system integrity, but later confirmed on June 26, 2026, that it would proceed with the development.³⁵

The project is described as a “significant engineering effort” and is expected to be completed by fall 2027, with a beta release anticipated shortly thereafter. However, it may be limited to users in the European Union, leaving out other regions.⁶
