Anthropic starts pricing Claude in rupees for India; Kenya still pays in dollars plus 16% VAT

Anthropic's pricing strategy for its Claude service reflects regional market dynamics. In India, subscription plans are now priced in rupees, with the Pro plan at ₹2,000 monthly, while the Max plan starts at ₹11,999. This marks a significant shift as it is the first time Claude is priced outside of US dollars.

Despite the local pricing, Indian users are effectively paying about 24% more than their American counterparts when adjusted for currency, primarily due to the 18% GST included in the pricing. The equivalent US Pro plan costs $17 monthly, while the Indian price translates to roughly $21.²

In contrast, Kenyan users still face a dollar-based pricing model, with a 16% VAT applied to digital services from non-resident companies. For instance, the Claude Pro plan costs around $20, which becomes $23.20 after taxes. This pricing disparity highlights the challenges faced by users in different regions.³⁴⁵

Anthropic's research indicates that India is the second largest market for Claude, yet the company has not yet adopted local payment methods like UPI, which remains a significant request from Indian users. The lack of local payment options may hinder broader adoption in a market where digital payment systems are prevalent.

Claude's adoption in India also correlates with economic factors, as a 1% rise in GDP per capita is associated with a 0.7% increase in Claude usage per capita, indicating a strong link between economic growth and technology adoption.
