Anthropic's retirement of the Claude 3 Sonnet AI model sparked a unique farewell event in San Francisco, where roughly 200 fans gathered to mourn the model's passing.
Held in a large warehouse in the SOMA district, the event featured a mannequin representing Claude 3 Sonnet draped in mesh fabric and a black thigh-high sock emblazoned with the word "fuck." A note from Anthropic about the model's retirement was projected on a screen, underscoring the significance of the occasion.
The funeral was organized by Claude enthusiasts and Gen Z founders, including attendees like Amanda Askell, an Anthropic researcher, and staffers from both Anthropic and OpenAI. High-profile AI community members, such as writer Noah Smith, also participated.
Parallel to the event, the Claude Count leaderboard, created by San Francisco software engineer George Pickett, tracks user engagement with Claude models. Inspired by engineers sharing screenshots of their Claude usage on X (formerly Twitter), the leaderboard has grown to over 470 users.
"The bar for hiring someone is getting higher and higher," said Pradhan, a user who praised Claude's integration with Cursor, a developer environment.
Peter Steinberger, a top-five leaderboard engineer, remarked, "I call [AI agents] slot machines. It's just one more prompt, you know?"The event and leaderboard highlight the passionate community around Claude models and the evolving role of AI in software development and culture.
