India's auto retail market reached a historic milestone in July 2026, with total sales soaring to 2,591,138 units, marking a 25.89% year-on-year increase. This surge was driven by strong performances across all vehicle categories, with passenger vehicle sales rising 19.13% to 416,555 units and commercial vehicles growing 24.04% to 99,666 units.

For the first time, all six major vehicle categories recorded their best-ever July performance. Two-wheelers remained the largest segment, with 1,818,289 units sold, reflecting a 28.25% increase. Notably, alternative-fuel vehicles, including electric vehicles (EVs), are closing in on petrol, which held a 41.68% market share compared to 40.59% for CNG, hybrid, and EVs combined. The gap has narrowed significantly from 13.21 percentage points a year earlier to just 1.09 percentage points this July.1

The total EV sales reached an all-time high of 327,901 units, with EV penetration rising to 12.7% from 9.6% in July 2025. Two-wheelers led the electrification trend with a record 11.24% share. Factors driving this shift include lower running costs, increased CNG options, and improved consumer confidence in alternative powertrains. Rural markets outpaced urban ones, supported by a favorable monsoon and affordability gains from GST adjustments, although heavy rains and floods limited month-on-month momentum in some segments.8910
