Adani Energy to expand Maharashtra network with 3,000 MVA substations in $194m project

India’s Adani Energy Solutions Limited (AESL) has secured a significant Rs16.6 billion ($194.2 million) interstate transmission project in Maharashtra, aimed at bolstering the state’s renewable energy infrastructure.

The project focuses on installing 3,000 megavolt-amperes (MVA) of substation capacity to facilitate the evacuation of 1.5 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy from upcoming hydro pumped storage projects in Raigad district. This energy will be transmitted to Mumbai and surrounding areas, enhancing grid stability and supporting India’s clean energy goals.

“The project will expand AESL’s transmission network to 26,696 circuit kilometres and 93,236 MVA of transformation capacity,” highlighting the company’s growing footprint in the power transmission sector.

AESL won the interstate transmission system (ISTS) project through a tariff-based competitive bidding (TBCB) process, coordinated by REC Power Development and Consultancy (RECPDCL). This competitive process underscores the project’s strategic importance and AESL’s capability in executing large-scale transmission infrastructure.

The expansion aligns with India’s broader push to integrate renewable energy sources into the grid, particularly hydro pumped storage, which plays a critical role in energy storage and grid balancing.
