About 100 firefighters are currently tackling a large fire at a recycling centre located on Landmann Way in Deptford, marking the second major incident at the site in under three months.12
The London Fire Brigade (LFB) reported that the fire involves 50 tonnes of household waste and was first reported around 8pm. Fire crews from East Greenwich, Old Kent Road, Deptford, and surrounding stations responded promptly, deploying 15 fire engines to the scene.345
Station commander Duncan Rees stated, “Approximately 100 firefighters are tackling a large fire at a recycling centre on an industrial estate on the border of Bermondsey and north Lewisham.”
Due to the significant amount of smoke generated by the blaze, residents in the vicinity have been advised to keep their doors and windows closed and to avoid the area altogether.
The LFB has confirmed that the cause of the fire is still under investigation, with no further details available at this time.
Additionally, the fire has disrupted rail services into London Bridge from New Cross, as the flames have blocked railway lines, according to National Rail.7
Fire crews are working under challenging conditions, utilizing one of the brigade’s 32-metre turntable ladders and a 64-metre turntable ladder as water towers to combat the flames from above.
This incident follows a previous fire at the same recycling centre earlier this summer, raising concerns about safety and fire prevention measures at the facility.
