Meta invests over US$9.1 billion in its first AI data center in Canada, the largest outside the US; project to create 3,000 jobs

Meta has committed over US$9.1 billion to establish its first AI data center in Sturgeon County, Alberta, which will be the largest outside the U.S. The facility, expected to support 3,000 construction jobs and 300 permanent operational roles, will utilize a closed-loop cooling system that conserves water.¹²³

The project, which is part of a broader strategy to enhance AI infrastructure, will be powered by a natural gas-fired plant developed by a consortium including Pembina Pipeline Ltd. The 932-megawatt power plant is anticipated to begin operations in the second half of 2030, contributing to Alberta's energy landscape.⁵

Technology and Innovation Minister Nate Glubish hailed the investment as “a big deal for Alberta,” emphasizing the province's regulatory framework designed to attract data center investments. The Alberta government also projects annual benefits of $250 million through royalties, taxes, and fees from the project.⁷

In addition to the data center, Meta plans to invest US$42 million in local infrastructure improvements, including roads and water systems, which will benefit the surrounding community. Alberta Premier Smith noted that “Artificial intelligence is transforming the global economy,” and this project positions Alberta as a leader in the sector.⁶

Meta's investment is part of a larger vision, with the company aiming for 100 billion dollars in data centers under construction in the next five years, further solidifying its commitment to expanding its global infrastructure network.
