At the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai, Huawei Technologies introduced its CloudMatrix 384 AI computing system, positioning itself as a formidable competitor to Nvidia's leading GB200 NVL72 system.

The CloudMatrix 384 integrates 384 of Huawei's latest Ascend 910C chips, significantly more than Nvidia's 72 B200 chips in the GB200 NVL72. According to SemiAnalysis, this design allows Huawei to outperform Nvidia on certain performance metrics by leveraging system-level innovations and a "supernode" architecture that enables ultra-high-speed chip interconnections.

"Huawei's system design capabilities compensate for weaker individual chip performance through the use of more chips and system-level innovations," SemiAnalysis noted.

This launch comes amid ongoing U.S. export restrictions that have curtailed Nvidia's ability to sell its most advanced AI chips in China since April. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang acknowledged Huawei's rapid progress, citing the CloudMatrix as an example.

"Huawei had been moving quite fast," Huang told Bloomberg in May.

Huawei markets the system under the name "Atlas 900 A3 SuperPoD," targeting AI model training and usage. The company aims to capture a share of China's burgeoning AI market, estimated by Huang to be worth $50 billion.

The WAIC event also featured major global tech players such as Tesla, Google, Amazon Web Services, and Siemens, highlighting the intense international competition in AI technology.

Huawei's debut of the CloudMatrix 384 underscores China's ambition to advance its AI capabilities despite geopolitical challenges and export controls.
