The FBI has confirmed that North Korean hackers, linked to the group TraderTraitor, stole over $6 billion from Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange.1

This incident, described as one of the largest digital asset thefts in history, has prompted federal authorities to urge cryptocurrency exchanges to block transactions related to the stolen funds.9

Binance has stated it will cover approximately 90% of the losses, having already replenished around $6 billion of the stolen assets. The exchange resumed withdrawals for major cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum after temporarily suspending them following the attack.8

“Binance will absorb the financial impact of these stolen funds, not our users,” the exchange reassured its customers.

The FBI's announcement marks the first public acknowledgment of North Korea's involvement, following earlier assessments from cybersecurity experts. Authorities expect the stolen assets to be laundered through decentralized finance platforms and instant exchange services.

Elon Musk has raised concerns about the potential for AI-driven hacks, stating, “Super intelligence agents will at some point do this to gain currency for themselves, not a human.” This reflects growing fears that advancements in AI could outpace security measures in the cryptocurrency sector.5

As the crypto market reacts, the fear and greed index has plunged into “fear” territory, indicating a significant shift in market sentiment following the hack. Experts warn that as cryptocurrency values rise, future breaches could be even larger.

“We should expect these records to keep being broken,” said Bernardo Brites, CEO of Trace Finance, highlighting the increasing speed of cyber threats.
