- The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has launched an Artificial Intelligence (AI)- and robotics-led water management pilot project in the city’s South Zone for the next one-and-a-half years.
- BWSSB and the companies signed an MoU for the pilot project on Wednesday.
- The project aims to reduce non-revenue water and improve efficiency, said BWSSB Chairperson Manjula N.
- The 18-month pilot project will use AI and robotics to detect pipeline leakages, identify water contamination and monitor the water supply network.
- The project will be implemented by SmartTerra, Solinas, Villgro Innovations Foundation and Titan Company Ltd.’s Design Impact Award Programme.

Bengaluru's BWSSB has launched an AI and robotics pilot project in the South Zone, set to run for 18 months, aimed at reducing non-revenue water and enhancing operational efficiency. The project, implemented in collaboration with SmartTerra, Solinas, Villgro Innovations Foundation, and Titan Company Ltd., will utilize advanced technology to address critical water management issues.159
The initiative will focus on detecting pipeline leakages, identifying water contamination, and monitoring the water supply network. BWSSB Chairperson Manjula N. emphasized the importance of this technology, stating, “The technology will help us identify water leakages, pipeline defects, water contamination and other factors resulting in revenue loss at an early stage, helping us initiate action early.”38

The project will employ advanced robotic equipment to inspect underground pipelines, providing early warnings to officials. Manjula noted, “The system will immediately alert the officials concerned whenever water leakages, pipeline damage or contamination is detected. This will enable us to act quickly and significantly reduce water loss.”67
This pilot project is part of the 'Design Impact Award' grant programme by Titan Company Ltd, ensuring that it does not impose any financial burden on the BWSSB.
